I am a HUGE fan of Howl at the Moon, especially the one here in San Antonio, Texas. I’m heading there tomorrow evening with my peeps from the UK for a Happy Hour party that I won – and I’m REALLY excited!! I was there for one in May (I’d won one then as well – we used it for our end-of-year staff party at work, and it was AWESOME!), and a friend and I went to another one in early June. The music is great, the food is yummy, and the drinks are cheap – sounds like the perfect combination to me!! If you have a Howl in your city, be sure to check it out (and generously tip the musicians – they are truly beyond talented), and if you happen to be in San Antonio, look for me tomorrow night — I’ll be the cute one!!
It was a hot, sticky day here in San Antonio today – my peeps from the UK and I went up the Tower of the Americas (if you haven’t been, you ought to check it out when you’re here – it’s brilliant!), visited the Mexican market El Mercado, and had lunch at La Margarita restaurant. It was a lovely day out in downtown San Antonio, but it would have been even lovelier had I been wearing this dress from Carolina Herrera:
Isn’t it amazing? Normally I don’t give her frocks a second glance because I don’t think they’d be flattering on me, but….with this one, I just can’t help myself. It’s so gorgeous I can barely stand it – but the $1195 price tag is far too steep for me to even remotely consider. I found this alternative from Chadwicks online (I don’t know their store, but they seem to have quite a large selection) for only $39.99….not bad, eh? Maybe I’ll give it a shot – if I do, I’ll be sure to let you know how it is!
I fancy a new handbag for fall (okay, okay….I fancy a new handbag pretty much all the time!), however, as much as I try to grow a money tree, so far I keep striking out. Since my meager budget won’t afford me the bag of my dreams (one like these little gems):
Marc Jacobs Paradise Rio Leather Satchel
Cole Haan Village Leather Triple Compartment Satchel
Chanel Bag of Greatness
I’ve been looking for less expensive alternatives – here’s a few lovely ones:
Shiraleah Davingnon Satchel -Boysenberry: From Target, $49.99
Shiraleah Davingnon Tote - Navy: From Target, $39.99
Mossimo Supply Co. Cargo Crossbody Tote - From Target, $24.99
Simply Vera Vera Wang Layla Hobo - From Kohl's, $55.30
I know that they aren’t going to be the same thing as one of the flash designer ones, but…for a cash-strapped me, they will more than do (I’m saving up for cowboy boots, remember???! ). I think they’re nice to look at, and probably really functional for me, so…I’ll be getting one of these. How about you???! What are your fall ‘go to’ bags?
My BFF is here from England with her amazing husband and gorgeous children – I am SO HAPPY!! I love being with them – they are just such a beautiful, fun family to be with, and I feel beyond lucky that they chose to spend their summer holiday with us! While they are here, my lovely friend will be celebrating a milestone birthday (Shhh! She’ll be 40, but she doesn’t look a day over 30! Truth!!!), and to commemorate her trip here to San Antonio and 12 days full of great food, loads of drinks and fun, I bought her the above necklace for her birthday…do you think she’ll like it? I hope so!
In the spirit of margaritas, here’s a recipe for a basic frozen margarita that I’ve tried and LOVED – give it a whirl, it’s delicious!!! Don’t blame your hangover on me….
1 (6 ounce) can frozen limeade concentrate
6 fluid ounces tequila
2 fluid ounces triple sec
Fill blender with crushed ice. Pour in limeade concentrate, tequila and triple sec. Blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve.
PS: Speaking of margaritas (again), have I mentioned the Alamo Beverage Barn to you yet? If not, here’s a link to their Facebook page. They have a drive-thru drink service and beer vendor sales place…it’s just amazing – you wheel in out of the blazing Texas sun and order beer, or a frozen margarita, and they bring it to your car….and off you go! Amazing! The drinks taste fab – check them out!! They are located at 8010 Bandera Road – on the corner of Mainland and Bandera. Maybe I’ll see you there!
Now that I live in Texas, I figure it’s time for me to get some boots! (I know, I’ve been here for 7 years…what’s taken me so long???!) I am having a love affair with this pair by Western company Corral – I tried them on in Shepler’s store this morning (look at me becoming a cowgirl at heart, who knew??!), and they felt like buttery pillows on my feet! Amazing! I keep picturing these sweet babies on my feet with little dresses, and jeans, and…pajamas (’cause that’s how I roll)…they are GORGEOUS! What do you think?
In other news, I ran in to Ulta this morning to get some navy/cobalt eyeliner (just a mood I’ve been feeling lately), and I saw this little gift set from Cargo -
I’ve used Cargo cosmetics many times and have been beyond happy with the colors and the quality. I grabbed this little travel set and it looks to be a winner to me. Everything is small-ish and portable, the colors look great and the price was awesome ($15 for the set, value of $50). Here’s a link in case you want a set, too: Cargo’s Most Wanted Kit.
I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m originally from Canada (eh), and a prouder Canadian I doubt you’ll find (I recently got a red maple leaf tattooed to my back…O Canada!!). A number of years ago there was an awesome commercial about being Canadian that was put out by the brewers of Molson Canadian (the finest beer EVER – I call it the nectar of the northern gods, no kidding) – here it is:
Great, isn’t it? I love it – and watch it all the time! Here’s a link to a new Canadian pride video, and I think it’s AWESOME! Give it a watch, then share it with someone and spread the word!
I have ALWAYS wanted a Chanel bag – and when I say always, I’m not really exaggerating. The first time I saw one was when I was 4 years old – it was a quilted black bag that I saw in a magazine, and that vision of perfection has stayed with me all this time…I dream of them, I covet them, I visit them in stores (yes, I know how pathetic I sound)…the whole nine yards. However, in case I haven’t yet mentioned, I work in education, and I go to graduate school as well (I’m working on my Doctorate), so the likelihood of me ever being able to afford a real Chanel bag is ZIP!!!! It’s a sad reality, but…I’m attempting to come to terms with this. I have come across a number of sites that sell decent-looking knockoffs, yet I somehow feel like this would be cheating. As an aside, I recently bought a pair of Jimmy Choos from ebay – they were previously worn (a bit), but they were Jimmy Choos, and much more affordable than a new pair would be. They feel like magical butter on my feet (they are THAT good), and they somehow make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I am aware of how shallow that makes me sound, but…is there anything wrong with wanting something fancy once in awhile? I have A LOT going on these days…I find comfort and happiness in the little things. Tell me…is there anything wrong with a wannabe fashionista buying knockoffs and shopping like a recessionista? I need some reassurance on this one…
Are you familiar with Korres lip butters? If not, then you really need to be – they are DIVINE! You can get them at Sephora (and other places, too!) – here’s the description of them from the Korres site: This deeply hydrating, petro-chemical free lip treatment penetrates the skin to nourish and correct dehydration rather than creating a waxy film that just sits on top of the lips.
Bonus Tip: Apply the lip butters to the apples of your cheeks for a natural tint!
Check them out – they’re yummy (and beautiful, too!)!
Have you watched the USA network show “Royal Pains” yet? It’s a great show – here’s a synopsis:
ROYAL PAINS centers on a young E.R. doctor who, after being wrongly blamed for a patient’s death, moves to the Hamptons and becomes the reluctant “doctor for hire” to the rich and famous. When the attractive administrator of the local hospital asks him to treat the town’s less fortunate, he finds himself walking the line between doing well for himself and doing good for others. (taken from www.imdb.com)
The beauty of the show lies not in the stories (while interesting, the episodes are somewhat formulaic), but in the acting – everyone on the show is GREAT, and they really put in some great performances. Henry Winkler (the Fonz) has been on this season playing the part of Hank’s estranged father, which has moved the show in a somewhat different direction this year; as well, the storyline surrounding PA Divya and her traditional arranged marriage has been really interesting. I hope you enjoy the show – it’s great summer fun, and every episode feels like heading to the Hamptons (or what I imagine heading to the Hamptons would be like…I’ve never been ).
PS: Paulo Costanzo plays Hank’s brother Evan – he is AWESOME on the show!
